Course objective

The Clinical Preceptor Course aims to provide participants with the essential knowledge, skills and professional attitude to fulfil the role & responsibilities of a clinical preceptor for newly recruited nurses and pre-registration/pre-enrolment nursing students.

Course content

Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to :

  1. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of a preceptor.
  2. Describe the application of  principles of adult learning as preceptor.
  3. Demonstrate how to assist preceptees in identifying their learning needs.
  4. Demonstrate how to develop learning plans with a preceptee.
  5. Discuss the different clinical teaching-learning strategies
  6. Practice the One-minute preceptor model and other  clinical teaching-learning strategies
  7. Communicate supportive constructive feedback using feedback models
  8. Demonstrate techniques to resolve potential preceptorship problems.
  9. Outline the concept of OJT.
  10. Demonstrate the use of OJT design framework
  11. Conduct a clinical teaching session based on the learning plan developed and evaluate the strategies used
  12. Reflect on the quality of all aspects of one preceptor role
