A Lifelong Battle with Heart Disease

Mdm Suriah suffers from various respiratory and heart-related co-morbidities. In early 2023, she was also diagnosed with kidney injury, a condition that came together with heart disease and required her to be on lifelong dialysis.

Her heart condition affected her breathing and oxygen supply during her sleep, which may cause heart and brain damage. To support her breathing at night, she required a Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) Machine.

Being unemployed and stricken with multiple health issues, paying for her medical bills and expenses was a constant weight on her mind. The NHCS Heart to Heart Fund assisted by providing her the NIV machine, so that she could manage her heart health at home with a peace of mind. Read her full story here

Another Shot at Life

At the tender age of 14 years old, Jovan Ho became the youngest person to be fitted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD)which helps the heart pump blood to the rest of the body. He suffers from cardiomyopathy, a disease of a weakened heart muscle, affects the heart from pumping blood to the rest of the body. Being a genetic condition within the family, it has affected his grandmother, father and younger sister, of which the latter two have since passed on at the ages of 34 and 2 respectively.

The Heart To Heart Fund has assisted Jovan in his journey. While waiting for a heart transplant, more can be done. Currently, there are ongoing research to study the correlation between cardiomyopathy and genetics, giving Jovan and fellow patients another glimmer of hope. Read his full story here

Diagnosed with systemic sclerosis and pulmonary hypertension, Mdm Haslina relies on the use of a Personal Mobility Device to get around and long term oxygen therapy to cope with her worsening symptoms such as severe fatigue, chest pain, heart palpitations and shortness of breath.

With the help of Heart To Heart Fund, she received a portable oxygen concentrator which provides her added mobility, and allows her to continue giving hope to others by supporting fellow patients who face similar health challenges.

Helping Andy live his dream

At 30 years old, Andy Peh was diagnosed with heart failure. His heart condition deteriorated and he was on the verge of death. A left ventricular assist device (LVAD), which helps his heart pump blood to the rest of his body, was his only chance of survival.

Andy could not afford the surgery. With three school-going children and barely any income, his future looked bleak.

Thankfully, with assistance from the Heart To Heart Fund, Andy was given a new lease of life, fulfilling his chance of living his dream – to be with his family.

The Ripple Effect of Giving

For philanthropy to come full circle, the support of donors like you, is crucial. For without them, financially burdened patients may not stand a second chance at life.

Because you gave

At NHCS, we raise funds for the NHCS Heart To Heart Fund and the Cardiovascular Sciences Academic Medical Programme (CVS ACP). The former supports patient care such as aiding financially needy patients and subsidising the cost of new treatment modalities, whilst the latter aims to advance research and education in heart care and possibly enjoys a one-for-one matching.

Just as 'Every drop makes an ocean', each gift counts and no matter what the amount is, it has the power to create effects much grander than the original scale – this is the ripple effect. Since 2010, the NHCS Heart to Heart Fund has supported more than 3000 financially needy heart patients in their medical treatments and expenses. Help us continue to give hope to our needy heart patients and their families.
