Overview – National Heart Centre Singapore

The National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) is a national and regional referral centre for cardiovascular diseases. Established in 1998, NHCS is the pioneer in cardiovascular care in Singapore.

NHCS is a member of SingHealth, the largest healthcare group in Singapore. SingHealth offers a complete range of multi-disciplinary and integrated medical care. The group consists of five hospitals, community hospitals, five national specialty centres and a network of polyclinics.

Clinical Excellence

NHCS provides a one-stop comprehensive cardiac care ranging from preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic to rehabilitative services. It is also the only centre in Singapore offering heart transplantation programme.

Each year, NHCS handles over 120,000 outpatient consultations, 9,000 interventional and surgical procedures and 10,000 inpatients. Its clinical outcomes for heart attack treatment, balloon angioplasty with stenting and coronary bypass surgery have been shown to be equivalent to international benchmarks.

NHCS ranked #12 as the World's Best Cardiology Hospital by Newsweek 2025 and remains as the top cardiology hospital in Singapore for the second year running. This follows several accolades in preceding years such as Best Specialized Hospitals APAC 2023, and the placement among the Top 100 in the World’s Best Specialized Hospital for 2023, 2022, 2021 (SGH-Cardiology) & 2019. NHCS has also been named as one of Singapore's Best Employers 2024 by The Straits Times and ranked top 5 in the healthcare and social category. Notably, NHCS is the only national specialty centre in the list of 250 employers.

Teaching Hospital

NHCS is a teaching hospital for undergraduate medical training as well as postgraduate and advanced training of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, nurses and allied health professionals. Students from National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine spend a substantial part of their curriculum in NHCS. Additionally, NHCS's medical staff hold teaching positions at these schools.

Patient-centred Research

The National Heart Research Institute Singapore (NHRIS) was established in 2013 to nurture a vibrant translational research environment of basic scientists and clinicians to transform cardiovascular outcomes through patient-centred research.

NHRIS has established strong collaborations with local and overseas universities/ hospitals, as well as industry partners to advance cardiovascular research and impact the care of patients with various heart disorders in Singapore. As an Academic Medicine Research Institute, we have successfully restructured research infrastructure to create a seamless "all-the-way" research pipeline that spans across basic science discovery to clinical implementation, creating a translational science environment to improve the lives of our patients.
