Overview

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death globally, and it affects a significant percentage of our population every year. Heart failure is an increasingly common and serious condition that significantly impacts quality of life and survival. Despite advances in medical therapy, many patients progress to advanced heart failure requiring specialised treatment. Surgery, including heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support such as left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), have transformed outcomes and offer renewed hope for patients with end-stage heart disease.

In National Heart Centre Singapore’s public forum on Surgery for the Failing Heart, we will explore the spectrum of advanced heart failure management. A cardiologist will provide an overview of heart failure and its progression, followed by a cardiac surgeon who will discuss surgical treatment options including transplantation and LVAD therapy. We will also hear from a transplant coordinator and a patient volunteer, who will share practical insights and lived experiences, offering a holistic perspective on the journey through advanced heart failure treatment.

Assistant Professor Zameer Abdul Aziz is a Consultant with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Director of the Heart Transplant & Mechanical Assist Device Programme at National Heart Centre Singapore.His clinical interest is in adult cardiac surgery with special interest in heart failure surgery and aortic surgery.
Dr Soh Heng Samuel

Dr Samuel Soh is an Associate Consultant Cardiologist at the National Heart Centre Singapore. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the National University of Singapore in 2017 and obtained his Master of Medicine and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom) in 2021. He achieved specialist accreditation in Singapore in January 2026. Dr Soh’s clinical interests are in the fields of Sports Cardiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Echocardiography.
