Fellowship Training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia

Objectives

To provide comprehensive knowledge on the practice of anaesthesia, surgical intensive care and acute pain management for the cardiothoracic surgical patient.

12 months

Content

  • Acquire a good grounding of physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology as related to the heart / thorax and principles for cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
  • Participate in assessment, perioperative and post-operative management of patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery. 
  • Anaesthesia management of patients for:
    • Coronary artery bypass surgery, valvular repair/replacement, repair / replacement of aortic aneurysm/dissection, robotic-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgery, implantation and explantation of ventricular assist device / extra-corporeal membrane oxygenator circuit, heart transplant, correction of grown-up congenital heart disease.
    • Thoracic surgical procedures such as mediastinoscopy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, extrapleural resection of thoracic wall tumor, thymectomy; video-assisted thoracic surgery; robotic-assisted minimally invasive thoracic surgery; lung transplant; insertion and explantation of extra-corporeal membrane oxygenator.
    • Procedures performed in the cardiovascular radiologic suite, such as electrophysiologic studies, insertion of automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator and device closure of atrial septal defect.
  • Observe and perform intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography and other monitoring techniques.
  • Conduct one research project (optional)

Admission Criteria

  • Qualified practicing anaesthesiologist in his or her country, who is interested in further specialisation in cardiothoracic anaesthesia
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English
