Fellowship Training in Heart Failure

Objective

To provide the subspecialty heart failure fellow with the theoretical and practical aspects of heart failure, including outpatient care to inotropic therapy, medchanical support both temporary and permanent and cardiac transplantation.

Content

• Broad understanding of the principals, pathophysiology, and management startegies for patients with moderate to severe heart failure.  This will include the use of inotropic agents, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, aldosterone antaginists and new agents.
• Understanding and participation in the management of patients with mechanical circulatory support including intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation and the HeartMate II left ventricular assist device.
• Participation in recruitment and management of patients in heart failure clinical trials.
• Expertise in the performance of endomyocardial biopsies under supervision of a transplant cardiologist.
• Broad expertise in preoperative evaluation of potential heart transplant candidates.
• Ability to manage post-transplant patients. Specifics will include common medical problems, drug-drug interactions, immunosuppressive protocols, and their complications. 
• Ability in the evaluation and management  of patients with non ischaemic cardiomyopathy including dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathies.

Admission Criteria

MMed, MRCP or its equivalent  Applicants who have completed 2 years general training in cardiology.
