Fellowship Training in Electrophysiology and Pacing

Objectives

To provide training in the theoretical and practical aspects of cardiac electrophysiology, catheter ablation, pacing and implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation.

Duration

12 months

Content

  • Understand basic cellular and whole organ electrophysiology related to normal physiology and cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Manage patients with cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.
  • Use surface electrocardiogram and other non-invasive tools such as signal averaging to evaluate complex cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Use and interpret non-invasive studies such as Holter monitors and transtelephonic monitors in the investigation of patients with arrhythmias.
  • Perform and interpret the upright tilt test in the investigation and management of patients with syncope.
  • Perform and appropriately interpret intracardiac recordings and programmed electrical stimulation techniques for diagnosis and management of cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Understand indications for appropriate use of pharmacological and non-pharmacologic therapy such as catheter ablation and surgery for arrhythmias, and be able to independently perform catheter ablation or arrhythmia surgery.
  • Understand indications for technique of implantation and follow-up of permanent pacemakers (single and dual chambers) and be able to perform both single and dual chamber pacing.
  • Understand indications for technique of implantation and follow-up of patients for antitachycardia devices and the automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

Admission Criteria

  • MMed, MRCP or its equivalent.
  • Completed at least 2 years of general training in Cardiology with an accredited post graduate Cardiology training programme.
