“I had a patient who was initially resistant to occupational therapy after surgery and became very anxious when her doctor advised her to see a psychiatrist.
To allay her fears, I communicated the treatment plan as small, relatable goals such as being able to zip up her clothing independently, which was a challenge after surgery. After a few sessions, I managed to influence the patient to recognise that rehabilitation is not as difficult as she had imagined.
My patient eventually opened up and asked me to relay to her doctor that all she needed was some time and space. She became less worried and was determined to achieve the goals set for her.
When you make every effort to care and comfort, it accumulates and creates a positive impact. People may not always recall everything you’ve done but they will remember how you have made them feel.”
