Cardiology Clinical Elective Posting

Description

This elective is intended to provide in-depth exposure to inpatient care in cardiology, including daily ward rounds, bedside teaching and involvement of students in the care of patients with a wide range of cardiac diseases as well as exposure to subspecialised cardiology procedures and tests.

Medical students will be expected to follow and participate in the ward rounds, and assist the team, under supervision, in their ward work. Participants are also required to join in the many core curriculum teaching sessions and conferences organised by the NHCS for junior doctors.

Objectives

  • Improve the understanding of the essentials of basic clinical cardiology, including history taking, physical examination, CXR and ECG interpretation.
  • Strengthen the understanding of cardiovascular conditions such as acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, hypertension, dyslipidemia, peripheral vascular diseases, etc.
  • Exposure to a wide-range of non-invasive and invasive cardiac tests and procedures in the evaluation and management of patients with known or suspected cardiovascular diseases.

Learning Methods

  • Supervisors Pairing System:
    • One ward Consultant and one ward Registrar/Senior Registrar will supervise one to two students
  • A broad-based comprehensive training programme would be developed comprising the following:
    • Supervisors:
      • Primary Supervisor’s Clinics (once a week per supervisor)
      • Ward Rounds
    • Subspeciality Tutors:
      • CVL – Diagnostic Cath
      • CVL – EP
      • Cardiac Laboratory - Echocardiology and O/P Non-invasive
      • Nuclear Cardiology
      • Cardiac Imaging
      • Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Preventive Cardiology - CPET
      • Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic
      • Heart Failure Clinic
    • Others:
      • Four to five Bedside Tutorials and two ECG Tutorials
      • Cardiology Continuous Medical Educational Activities (Lunch-time Teaching)


Important

Of note, students attached to NHCS will not be expected to carry out any ward-based invasive procedures such as IV Cannulation, blood-taking, pleural tap or central line setting even under supervision.
