National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) Heart2Heart Fund
Introduction
Cancer, heart disease, diabetes and brain disorders - these are just a few common killer threats in Singapore. Heart disease is the number two killer in Singapore. Over the years, numerous patients have come through the doors of NHCS seeking treatment for their cardiovascular related ailments. NHCS also continuously brings in the latest proven medical technology to ensure that its patients receive the highest level of optimal care.
With an ageing population and more Singaporeans becoming sedentary and developing unhealthy eating habits, cardiovascular disease is set to increase.
To meet these healthcare challenges of tomorrow, we need your support towards the Heart2Heart Fund which was set up by NHCS to support projects and programmes to improve the quality of life of heart patients.
Your support can come in the form of
- A one-off or monthly donation
- A donation to commemorate a special occasion
The donation can be made in memory of a family member, friend or corporation. Physical facilities can be named in the person's/ corporation's honour.
- A bequest
You can leave a legacy beyond your lifetime by bequeathing a specific property (real estate) or donating a specific amount or a percentage of your estate.

The National Heart Centre Singapore Heart2Heart Fund is used to fund the following areas:
Financial Assistance To Needy Patients
Our Medical Social Services Department sees an increasing number of patients approaching them for financial assistance, especially so during an economic downturn for their medical needs. Patients may not be eligible for public assistance or Medifund assistance and yet require financial aid to help pay for items such as wheelchair, oxygen ventilators and pumps.

“Both my wife and I are stressed by the constant need of me to be admitted into the hospital regularly for chest pains and breathlessness. Using the new oxygen concentrator bought by NHCS Heart2Heart Fund eases my symptoms greatly and improves my quality of life significantly. I also do not need to feel bad about having my wife stay for long hours in the hospital to accompany me.”
Mr Leong Yan Koh, 71-year-old, retired and childless, suffers from congestive heart failure due to coronary heart disease and has a history of stroke and heart attack. |
New Treatment Modality
With the continual emergence of new medical technology, NHCS strives to bring proven and viable treatment modality to our patients at affordable cost.
NHCS was the first in Asia to introduce minimally-invasive percutaneous aortic valve replacement to treat patients with narrowed aortic valves and could not undergo the conventional open heart surgery. The diseased valves are replaced with bioprosthetic tissue valves.
Mr Tang Yat Cheong, a retiree, who had suffered from breathlessness and fainting spells, was the first one to undergo this treatment in February 2009.

‘The conventional surgery was unsuitable because of my chest scar due to an earlier surgery. My condition was very serious and if not for this novel treatment, I’d be gone. I feel good and thanks to my doctors for giving me a new lease of life. I’m free of those symptoms and can continue with my daily morning walks,’ said a cheerful Mr Tang seen together with his wife. |
The bioprosthetic tissue valve implanted in Mr Tang was funded by the NHCS Heart2Heart Fund.
Research and Development
NHCS dedicates resources to finding new cures for cardiovascular disease. One such research area which holds great promise for patients with heart failure involves the use of autologous stem cells taken from suitable patients to repair and repopulate their damaged heart muscles.
Training and Education
The technology in the medical field is ever evolving and it is critical that our staff are constantly kept abreast of developments so that they can continuously deliver high standards of care to the patients.
New NHCS Building
The new NHCS building is targeted to be operational by 2013. All the key clinical services will be centralised at the new building to further enhance care delivery and clinical outcomes. Patient-centric services, improved facilities and better resources will definitely surpass the standard of patient care today.
