New procedure helps high-risk heart patient
FOR 10 agonising months, retiree Anthony Cher waited for a solution to his failing heart.

After two heart operations, doctors had told the 72-year-old that it was too risky to go for a third one.

The solution came in February this year, in the form of a new minimally invasive procedure to fix faulty heart valves.

For years, Mr Rahman Abdullah, 42, lived life on the wild side.

The bass guitarist would play at night clubs till the wee hours of the morning. He drank heavily and smoked even more, about 40 cigarettes a day, a habit he picked up at the tender age of nine.

His blood pressure was sky high.

His migraines got worse.

Things were heading for a disaster.

That happened in early 2009, when he suffered a heart attack and went into a coma.

My heart will go on - with this pump (Sunday Times)
The heart attack came like a bolt out of the blue, striking Dutchwoman Angelique Schoeber soon after the birth of her third child in Singapore.

That was just over a year ago. Ms Schoeber, now 39, was so severely weakened that she had to be fitted with a mechanical heart to keep her alive. Today, the mother-of-three is back on her feet. Recently here again for the first time since that 2010 scare, she even managed to finish a three-hour nature walk with relative ease.
